Yoga Found to Help Obese Men Lose Weight and Sleep Better
A new study has found that yoga can help obese men lose weight, improve body composition, and enhance sleep quality. The research, conducted over 14 weeks, showed that participants who practiced yoga five days a week saw improvements in weight, BMI, and sleep, while those who did not practice yoga saw no significant changes.
How the Study Was Conducted
The study involved 80 obese men, randomly divided into two groups:
- Yoga Group (40 participants): Practiced yoga for 1.5 hours, five days a week.
- Control Group (40 participants): Continued their regular daily activities without yoga.
At the end of the study, researchers measured body composition and sleep quality using scientific tools like the InBody R20 and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
Key Findings: Yoga and Weight Loss
The yoga group showed significant improvements:
- Weight Reduction (P = 0.004) – Participants lost weight.
- Lower BMI (P = 0.008) – Body mass index (BMI) dropped.
- Improved Bone Mass (P = 0.017) – Indicating better overall health.
- Reduced Obesity Degree (P = 0.005) – Less fat accumulation in the body.
- Better Mineral Mass (P = 0.046) – Essential for strong bones.
The control group, which did not practice yoga, saw no significant changes in these factors.

Yoga and Better Sleep
One of the most interesting results was improved sleep quality in the yoga group (P = 0.017). Poor sleep is linked to obesity, stress, and other health issues. The study showed that practicing yoga regularly can lead to better sleep and overall well-being.
Why This Matters
Obesity is a growing problem worldwide and is linked to many diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and sleep disorders. While exercise and diet play a key role in weight loss, yoga offers a natural and holistic approach that also improves mental and emotional health.
What You Can Do
If you are struggling with obesity or poor sleep, incorporating yoga into your daily routine may help. Simple yoga practices such as Surya Namaskar, Pranayama (breathing exercises), and meditation can contribute to weight loss and better sleep.
Final Thoughts
This study reinforces that yoga is not just about flexibility and relaxation—it is a powerful tool for managing obesity and improving overall health. With no side effects and multiple benefits, yoga can be a great addition to any fitness routine.
