Jamnagar – In a landmark move to bolster global wellness, the Ministry of Ayush has joined hands with the World Health Organization (WHO) to establish the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre (GTMC) in Jamnagar. This pioneering initiative is set to become a key knowledge hub for evidence-based traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine (TCIM) on a global scale.
Key Findings and Objectives
- Global Leadership in Traditional Medicine:
The GTMC will position Ayush systems globally by providing leadership on global health matters related to traditional medicine. It aims to ensure the quality, safety, and efficacy of these systems and promote their rational use. - Evidence-Based Research and Training:
The centre will enhance research by developing norms, standards, and guidelines, as well as by creating a collaborative network of data banks, virtual libraries, and academic institutions. Specific capacity-building and training programmes will be developed, both on-campus and online, in partnership with strategic organizations like the WHO Academy. - Project Collaboration Agreements:
Since 2016, the Ministry of Ayush has signed three Project Collaboration Agreements (PCAs) with WHO to advance scientific traditional systems of healthcare. A donor agreement signed on July 31, 2024, further underscores India’s commitment to this global initiative.
Significance and Real-World Applications
The establishment of the GTMC is not just about advancing research—it is about integrating traditional medicine into global public health policies. By bridging ancient wisdom with modern scientific practices, the centre is expected to:
- Improve Global Health Security: Provide member countries with evidence-based policies and innovative healthcare practices.
- Enhance Training and Capacity Building: Empower healthcare professionals and researchers with advanced training in traditional medicine.
- Promote Sustainable Healthcare: Support the development of holistic and sustainable approaches in healthcare through collaborative international efforts.
This initiative is set to redefine traditional medicine’s role in the modern world and offers a promising future for global health and wellness.
